In 2002 Gemma Sisia, a determined country girl from Northern NSW, opened
The School of St Jude (named after the patron saint of hopeless cases) in Tanzania, Africa with just three small students and one teacher.
From those humble beginnings, the school now has over 1150 students and one of the best academic records in the country. These students are from some of the poorest families in the district and without a scholarship to St Jude's, they’d struggle to escape the spiral of poverty into which they were born. In 2007, Gemma's achievements were honoured by an Order of Australia.
Guided by the school's philosophy of 'Fighting Poverty through Education', Gemma is determined St Jude’s will continue to grow and maintain the high standard of academic achievement it currently enjoys.
